Open CarPool was an idea created within the eBay GreenTeam by environmentally engaged eBay employees. It was formerly known as Call2Ride but now got opened to the community in order to scale the environmental savings. Car pools only work with a high matching probability for both drivers and passengers. Like within any other marketplace, network effects determine the value. Most car pooling or ride sharing initiatives failed so far because they never reached the so called “critical mass” – or more precisely the “critical density”. Open CarPool will overcome this hurdle by joining offers and requests within companies and from various car pool agencies for the benefit of all participants.
